My Four Blog Posts

Blog Post #12: The Hangover and Grazian's article
Blog Post # 1: Are Males Made or Born
Blog Post #11: Dialog

Course Reflections

1). The one assignment that was fun to do was watching The Hangover, then had to talk about the bromance bond and relate it to Grazian's article. This was fun for me because the film was hilarious and the work was easy. From doing this assignment I learned that men could have this bromance bond and still be masculine.

2). There weren't any assignments that I didn't care for, but there were times I felt like giving up and not completing them.

3). Overall I do think Blogger was a useful tool to this class because, it helped me keep my work organized because it's all done on the computer. It also gave me a chnace to learn about the website.

4). We pretty much covered all topics on masculinity pretty well. I would have liked to touch more on the bromance topic.

blog post #12

People think that when maen have a bromance they can't be masculine as well. The movie The Hangover proves this wrong and shows a good example of bromance. The four friends had a really good bond between them. When they lost their friend they focused on getting him back and tried to keep themselves together. I think a man can still be masculine and still keep their bromance relationship. Their not like girls that are judgmental of everything, they just fool around and have fun. In the movie we see the guys prepare for their night out in Vegas by pregaming as Grazian calls. They had some alcohol to get ready for their night out that they didn't remember. As Grazian said in his article "Pregaming consists of drinking with your "boys" so that you don't have to purchase as many drinks while you are out to feel the desired buzz" (326). This gives the that alcohol courage. Guys do different things in their bromance than girls do with their friendship. They just want to have fun and enjoy a night out, having a bromance doesn't mean you can't still be masculine. It's not like they sit around and talk about other guys like girls do, they still do manly things.

Zinn's reading talks about Chicano men and their masculinity. Chicano men are not treated very well in society, they don't get very good jobs and if they do get a job their boss treats them like crap. This cases them to be mad at their wives and children. I think the issue they are having is a internal one because they may feel bad about being put down all the time by their bosses or by anyone in society. They don't like the way they are treated so they take it out on others inferior than them.

As Marable and Espiritu mentioned in their articles, I do believe that women play a role in masculinity. I say this because a woman is what helps a man builds his masculinity, meaning a women boosts them and they act more manly. Men try to be manly so they can get noticed by women. As Marable said in his article the black woman have been through everything alongside the black male, such as slavery. A man having a woman by his side will make him feel like more of a man.

Blog Post #11

Me: Whats up?
Stacy: Nothing much, omg I have to tell you about the guy I met last night!
Me: Tell me, is he another douche bag?
Stacy: No not even I think it was love at first sight.
Me: Oh wow Stacy. What makes you think it's love.
Stacy: idk he was just so smooth, and he told me he was feeling me you know? He was so cute and sexy, we dance all night then he invited me to his house.
Me: That's what most guys do Stacy they try to talk to you and make you feel like the only girl that's important to them. He knows what he's doing, he's a real smooth talker.
Stacy: Ohh please, no he's not I mean he was so nice and he couldn't keep his hands off me. He bought like 6 shots of tequila.
Me: What his wrong with you? I can't believe your so clueless. If  I'm a guy and i see a cute girl in a club alone all im thinking about is getting her drunk and getting her in my bed.
Stacy: Well he did get me in bed, but it wasn't like im just some other girl you know. It was love i felt it.
Me: Your so easy, I bet he doesn't even call you back unless he just wants to get you in bed again.
Stacy: Whatever, your just jealous.
Me: really, you think im jealous? come on Stacy shit like this happens all the time. A guy meets a girl and the girl think she's in love, it's like your desperate.
Stacy: I know how it sounds, but when your in love you just know.
Me: Stop saying it's love you sound silly. If any girl go to the club in a tight dress and breast out, which guy wouldn't be all over her. Come on Stacy, be real
Stacy: Whatever, I don't wanna hear you.
Me: Whatever to you, the truth hurts sweety.

Blog Post #9: Coltrane

Children raised by one parent are usually more independent than one's raised by both parents. Children that are raised by single parents are more independent because they will see the obstacles that their parent have to deal with and this can affect the child. Single parenting can cause a child to be more responsible about everything and appreciate life more. I think That both parents are better for a child to have in their lives than one. With both parents, the child can have both a male and female figure.

Men are known to be better at certain jobs than women are. Men are pushed by society in a way to do better at there jobs. Automatically men have a better chance of getting a job at any profession than a woman would.

William, L. Christine. "The Glass Escalator: Hidden Advantages for Men in the "Female" Professions". Men's Lives.5th edition. Michael, Messner A. Michael. New York: Allyn & Bacon. 2001. 211 224. print.

Summary: Williams is trying to show us that women struggle with trying to get a profession, but men on the other hand are on the glass escalator going up to the top without any pressure.

Assesment: This is a good source to use for a class because it has a lot of statistics and research. Williams did not only research information from other sources but, she also did interviews on her own.

Reflection: The source fits into my research because, I can use the sources that Williams gave to find more information.

Blog post #4: Manning Marable

Throughout American history, blacks were discriminated against because of the color of their skin. Blacks were subsistent to their white masters. whites would physically abuse their African American slaves by castrating, lyncing, raping and stripping black men of their manhood. white males performes these punishments because they felt intimidated by African Americans. They could not fathom the idea that African Americans were smater or more physically stronger so they prohibited blacks from reading and writing . Knowledge is power and whites stripped blacks from these basic rights because they feared that if blacks were given the chance to get an education blacks would rebel aginst them.

Who's the Man

Paul Theroux says "being a man means being stupid..." and Manning Marable believes a black man is a father, husband, lover..." I believe the Marable describes a man as more masculine than the way Paul Theroux did. Being a man means being a hardworker, being a good dad etc. I do agree that men can be stuped at times but a man is known to be the dominant gender. Paul Theroux only tells us why he dislikes being a man but, Marable tells us what a man is expected to be in society. He also tells us what different issues a white man and a black man has to deal with. I believe the way Marable described a male is more masculine.

Blog Post #3: The Male Myth

Paul Theroux says "being a man means being stupid, be unfeeling, obedient and soldierly, and stop thinking". I do agree that men do all theses things but, just because your a man it does not mean you have to be "manly". There are a lot of things men are known to do, or how they have to behave. You were born a man so be a man, society does not have to make you "manly". I agree and disagree with this statement, being a man means being stupid, soldierly, etc...but it's up to you to make yourself a man and not let society make you "manly".

post #2 "night to His Day"

Lorber's reading basically talks about how society views genders. people are so used to seeing a woman on taking care of a child, that it shocks them if a man does it. i believe society looks at genders as the male being more dominant than the female. Both genders is what makes this world, and society is what makes the genders.

Blog Post #1: Are males born or made

I believe that men are made not born. I belive this because growing up as a child your parents will buy you toys and clothes based on your gender. yes if you were borned with a penis your a male, but after birth you get treated like a boy is suppose to be treated. Your father wants you to be tough and play sports, because that is what a man is known to do. Your mother buys you " boys" clothes and toys, and you will play with little boys. Because a child grows up with everyone telling them or showing them how they are suppose to act based on their genders, they might be ashamed or scared to act as how the opposite gender will act. This is why i believe men are made and not born, because even though they you were born with a certain gential, they are told how to act by your peers or family. This world is what makes a man.
What shocked me in this reading is that doctors remove genitials if a male was born with a "small" penis. I mean come on it's a newborn that we're talking about here. His penis is suppose to be the size of a grown man penis?
